More Screwing Around w/singapore

I’m breaking the photo gallery again. Just accept it. Either it will work better for Firefox users when I’m done, or it will be no worse.

UPDATE: Aw, hell with it. Switched back.

Maintenance Again

Fixing everything that broke on the blog side of things when I updated my photo gallery (and renamed a bunch of folders at the same time). To be followed by fixing some of the metadata I lost when I updated my photo gallery (and renamed a bunch of folders at the same time). To be followed by trying to fix the sort order of pictures in my photo gallery, which broke when I updated it. And some other stuff. I’d normally be doing Stuff with People on a Friday night, but everyone is out doing other Stuff and the weather isn’t that great anyways. And I also don’t feel 100%, which is more of an excuse than anything else.

Okay, to work.

Maintenance

I’m attempting to upgrade my installation of singapore, my photo gallery script, and it’s going to be nontrivial. Service may be disrupted for several hours.

But when it’s done, you can go back to looking at my beautiful pictures. Did I mention that my Europe photos were done? They’ll get their own post when this is all completed.

Missing the Ground

Hmm. New banner. That’s all.

Life is doing its thing. I’d like to post on some of the lifehack stuff that I’ve discovered, but the big hack I care about right now is the me sleeping hack. Good night.

MDRS Crew 37: Out of the Gate

Georgia Tech’s crew at the Mars Desert Research Station is now in place. Myself and ten others are working Mission Support (in rotation), and there are five students and a Research Engineer in situ in Utah at the station.

So read about all the exploits at the above links. In the works: CotB IV, and a post on reliance on procedures and the skill of adaptation (with bonus GT Post Office rant).

Galleries semi-offline

I’m rethinking the way I’m integrating my photo gallery. In the meantime, odd behavior may occur or it may become alltogether unreachable. I’ll update this post when it’s all working again.

UPDATE: Think I’ve got it sorted. The gallery is now directly accessible through this address. In addition, I’m using the mod_rewrite support so the page names make more sense.

UPDATE II: (Geekiness alert—ignore the following) So as to not leave anything fixed for too long, and in the spirit of eating one’s own dogfood, I’ve upgraded the gallery to the CVS (that is to say, absolute latest) version with my patches applied, and the backend switched over to the MySQL database. This will allow me to do More Cool Things and actually be able to test them. However, metadata will be temporarily missing until I replace it.

Bloggiversary

Somewhere a few days ago I had my second. My second bloggiversary gift is one of these, which has finally arrived today.

Been working on a number of different projects, both at and not at work, and will be starting another this afternoon when I start my research project with Dr. Ruffin.

General Updates

Gallery should work now.

I’m at home, but that can be discussed some other time.

Some slightly older posts with multiple photos have been “more’d” to reduce loading times for those of you on slower connections (and to generally save on bandwitdh). Just click on “more” at the end to see the rest of the photos. In the future, photo posts will only contain a couple of highlights then just point at the photo gallery (which is, of course, the whole point).

I expect a large number of family members and people vaguely related to my family will be around here at some time in the near future, due to this website’s inclusion in this year’s Christmas letter. In light of this, be sure to check out my sister’s website if you’re looking for writing which has been certified USDA Prime, as opposed to my Utility cuts. Of course, feel free to dig back on this site too.

Photo Gallery Update

I’ve started working on the photogallery. I’ve ended up using singapore instead of either of the other two solutions. It’s a pretty elegant management system, and the only major drawback is a lack of support for EXIF data, which is being worked on. I plan on trying to patch in the EXIF support after I get the styling fixed.

The photo gallery can be found here. Note that the styling is still pretty broken as of this post. Hopefully I’ll be able to work more on all this this weekend.

Going Paid

It looks like I’m going to transition over to a paid hosting solution. I’ve used up all my available space on Prism, and this particular plan runs $3.00/mo. for 300 MB of space and 15 GB/mo. of transfer. Should be plenty, unless I’m suddenly discovered by Glenn Reynolds.

This also gives me the opportunity to switch over to WordPress for my blog. I’ve been using it quite successfully for the past several months on the Georgia Tech AIAA website, and I like its flexibility and posting speed (no rebuilds!) Blogger is a wonderful service, but I’ll be able to do a lot of very cool things that Blogger just can’t handle easily or at all.

Right now this exists on a test site, but eventually this will become http://patrick.greentaperacing.us/blog/ and the site on Prism will be retired. It’s primarily a matter of placing all the photos in some better management system, possibly Coppermine, another piece of software I’m using on the AIAA page, and need to get better at modifying [UPDATE: Or Pictorialis]; then fixing all the old posts. Old content from The Eventuate and Desideratum will remain on Prism for the time being.

Oh yeah, categorizing the old imported posts. That may or may not happen.
